Outlook does not accept my password

If Outlook doesn’t accept your password and you know you’re using the correct password for your Gmail account, you may have an older version of Outlook that currently doesn’t support this faster Gmail setup option. In that case, you’ll need to use two-factor authentication and an app password to help verify that you’re the person trying to access your Gmail account.

Gmail allows you to add your account to Outlook without setting up two-factor authentication and using an app password, but you must enable a setting that allows “less secure apps” to connect to your account. We do not recommend this configuration. We recommend enabling two-factor authentication and using an application password.

To enable two-factor authentication and obtain an application password, follow the steps below.

  1. Go to Gmail in the browser and select the Google Apps icon in the upper right corner of the screen.

    Select Google Apps settings

  2. On the left, select Safety.
Select Security on the far left.

  3. In Logging in to Google, if Two-step verification It’s OUT, click the> next to OUT to turn IN. Otherwise, skip to step 4.

    1. On the first screen, click CONTINUE.

    2. If prompted, enter your Gmail password and click NEXT.

    3. Enter your phone number and select whether to receive your verification codes by text message or call. Then click NEXT.

    4. Enter the code you received and click NEXT.

    5. Click TURN ON to complete the 2-step verification setup.

    6. Return to the previous screen by clicking the left arrow at the top of the screen, next to Two-step verification.

Select the back arrow to continue
