Expand from space: Google Earth allows you to descend from space to see almost any location on Earth!

What is Google Earth?

Google Earth is a free program from Google that allows you to “fly” over a virtual globe and see the Earth through high-resolution graphics and satellite images. It is much higher than static maps and satellite images. Google Earth offers an overview of the landscape drones below.

Google Earth is the most detailed globe in the world and one of the most downloaded programs in the history of the Internet. Within minutes, you will be expanding your hometown and taking visual tours to the most visited or remote places on our planet.

The images are detailed enough that, in the most populated areas, you can clearly see your home, objects in the yard and sometimes recognize your car parked along the street. A digital elevation model in Google Earth allows you to view the landscape of many geographical areas in 3D.

Recent images, updated regularly

Most of the images on Google Earth were acquired in the past three years, and Google is continually updating the image defined for different parts of the Earth. Large cities generally have newer, higher-resolution images than sparsely populated areas.

There is a misunderstanding among some that the images displayed in the Google Earth program are updated live directly from satellites. This is not the case. The images are acquired by satellites, processed by commercial image providers or government agencies, and then updated in the Google Earth image database in batches.

However, Google and its image providers have the ability to quickly integrate new images into the program. This is sometimes done in emergency situations – such as when an area is hit by a natural disaster and new images would be of great help to recovery and relief efforts.

Free Download

Google Earth is a free downloadable program that you install on your Windows, Mac or Linux desktop or laptop computer. The program requires very little space on your hard drive, because the images are stored on Google’s servers and transmitted to your computer on demand.

Google Earth is also available as a browser plug-in and as a mobile application. Google has offered the program for free and has been improving it regularly since 2005. It has been downloaded more than a billion times.

When you start the Google Earth program on your computer or mobile device, it displays an image of Earth from space. You can easily use the controls to “fly” down and find your location. However, if you’re in a hurry, just look for an address or the name of a landmark or the geographic coordinates. Google Earth will take you to your destination quickly.

security issues with Google Earth?

Rarely seen places: Some people believe that Google Earth provides a lot of information about important buildings, which can lead to security concerns. Others believe that Google Earth allows close-up views of its properties that violate its privacy.

Developed for the CIA?

Google Earth was originally called “Earth Viewer 3D”. It was developed by Keyhole, Inc., a company funded by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). The software was developed to be a program to “navigate the Earth” – and that is exactly what it does.

Google purchased Keyhole in 2004 and, with this acquisition, obtained the Earth Viewer 3D, which it improved and distributed free to the public from 2005. Get your free copy of Google Earth using the blue button below.
