Google and Apple are working on a ‘contact tracking system‘To locate the spread of the coronavirus and helps to contain it. The new tool should be available for Android and iOS phones via software updates soon, but according to a report, Huawei phone users will be left out of this update.
Huawei’s ban in the U.S. forced the Chinese smartphone maker to launch its new phones without Google apps and services. According The telegraph, users who have the latest Huawei phones that come without Google services will not be able to use this contact tracking tool.
Huawei and Honor phones now have their own app store called App Gallery. Although the report mentions that these new phones do not run the tool being developed by Apple and Google for global distribution, there is a chance that older Huawei phones that were sold before the ban and execution of Google services in the U.S. can make use of this system. However, there is no confirmation on this.
How the contact tracking system works
The “contact tracking system” uses Bluetooth LE (low power) for proximity detection to identify people with whom a user comes in contact and keeps a record in the form of anonymous identifying signals. If a person is positively diagnosed with COVID-19, the contact history can be extracted from the phone. With the user’s consent, the phone carries the last 14 days of keys to its broadcast beacons in the cloud.
Other users who contacted this person receive a message stating that they contacted some who tested positive for COVID-19. Users also receive a notification with information on what to do next.
Huawei is among the top three smartphone manufacturers in the world and the company had shipped more than 56 million smartphones by the fourth quarter of 2019. However, it is unclear how many of these devices Google’s mobile apps and services are installed on.
Hungama app available at Huawei App Gallery
Huawei’s App Gallery has just integrated Hungama as Honor and Huawei’s main online streaming channel. This will allow the Hungama Music app for streaming music and the Hungama Play app for streaming video on Huawei and Honor phones. The newly developed Huawei App Gallery already has 400 million monthly active users and more than 1.3 million registered developers globally.
