Zoom vs. Google Hangouts: video chat apps for working and staying in touch in comparison – ABOUT MAG 2020

To delay the spread of coronavirus, many governments have imposed quarantines, blockades and shelter requests on site. This means that many people are now working from home and personal visits have been transferred to video chat apps and services.

While there are many options available, whether you’re looking for a virtual happy hour or organizing a brainstorming session with coworkers, two popular options are Zoom and Google Hangouts. See how the two video chat and conferencing apps compare – especially in light of Recent security and privacy issues from Zoom.

Google Hangouts is the technology giant’s app for free video and voice calls, as well as group messaging. You need a Google account to start a call, but you can join one without it. You can invite up to 150 people to a Google Hangouts chat, but only 25 can join a video call at the same time.

In response to the coronavirus outbreak, Google also offers many of the features of its commercial version, Google Hangouts meeting, free of charge to help people, businesses and schools stay connected. You can now host larger meetings of up to 250 participants for free on a call, and live streaming is supported by up to 100,000 viewers in a domain, and you can also record meetings and save them to Google Drive. You can take advantage of the free tools until September 30th.

With Google’s speech-to-text feature, Hangouts Meet has the option of real-time captioning in meetings or video chats – ideal for people with hearing impairments or who need to keep the volume down.

You can use Google Hangouts via the iOS or Android app, web browser, Chrome extension, or Gmail account. To start a call, open hangouts.google.com or in the Gmail sidebar. Select a person from the Hangouts list or search for their name or email address and click on them. Click Video call. In the app, open it and tap the icon + button. Then enter your contact’s name or email and press the camera icon to start a video call.

The Enlargement The videoconferencing application works for Android, iOS, PC and Mac. The application offers a basic free plan hosting up to 100 participants. There are also options for teams of small and medium businesses ($ 15 to $ 20 per month per host) and large companies for $ 20 per month per host with a minimum of 50 hosts. You can adjust meeting times and select multiple hosts. Up to 1,000 people can participate in a single video call with zoom and 49 videos can appear on the screen at once.

The application has HD video and audio features, collaboration tools such as simultaneous screen sharing and co-annotation and the ability to record meetings and generate transcripts. Outlook, Gmail and iCal support scheduling and starting meetings. In Gmail, for example, just click on the calendar icon, click on your meeting time and click on the link in Join Zoom Meeting. If the host has scheduled it, there may also be call options.

If the microphone and the camera are off, Zoom has the option of communicating via chat (the interface looks a bit like Slack). This feature can also be useful if it is a massive general meeting and the opportunity for questions is available.

It’s free to sign up for Zoom – you can manually create an account with an email or log in to Google or Facebook.

If you use Zoom, it is important to take into account the security problems that have arisen since its rapid rise in popularity during the coronavirus pandemic. Privacy experts expressed concern about the privacy risks of videoconferencing software hacker vulnerabilities as well as zoombombing (where uninvited participants enter and interrupt meetings). The New York City Department of Education recently told teachers to stop using Zoom in favor of Microsoft Teams While security threats are handled by the company.

However, if you are still using the platform, there are some steps you can take to protect your meetings, such as using a meeting ID and enabling the “Waiting Room” feature so you can see who is trying to join a meeting before allow Access.
