R. KellyAttorneys say his client was beaten while behind bars and no one at the prison “raised a finger” to avoid the attack.
According CNN, Kelly’s legal team filed the complaint in court documents filed on Friday. His lawyers say the surveillance video at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Chicago shows that a convict “went a long way … before carrying out that act, without any opposition”. Lawyers say Kelly suffered “significant physical and psychological injuries” due to the August attack.
“An unresolved issue remains whether MCC people encouraged, and then allowed, a beating from Kelly,” wrote Michael Leonard, R. Kelly’s lawyer. “That alone deserves a probationary hearing.”
CNN reports an inmate named Jeremiah Farmer – a convicted member of the Latin Kings street gang –identified himself as Kelly’s striker in a court case last month. Farmer said he beat Kelly in an attempt to get the media’s attention to his own extortion case.
An MCC guard, identified as “D. Szyhowski”, reportedly met with Farmer shortly before the attack. The official says Farmer ignored his orders to stay in his office and managed to get into Kelly’s cell and started punching him in the head and torso. Szyhowski says he then used pepper spray and demanded that Farmer stop the attack. The farmer supposedly followed the order and left the cell.
According Chicago TribuneKelly’s defense team is trying to question Farmer under oath as part of his attempts to release his client on bail. Kelly has been behind bars since the summer of 2019. He faces federal and state charges of child pornography, sexual assault and obstruction of justice in Illinois and New York.
