MONROE COUNTY, Florida – A man was caught trying to break the glass door of a gas station with a brick on Wednesday morning, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.
A witness saw Steven Allen Waychoft, 36, trying to break into the Chevron gas station in Sunshine Key at about 4 am and called the police.
When Waychoft saw the witness, he ran away, police said. The door was badly damaged, but still intact. The gas station manager estimated that the damage would cost about $ 1,000 to repair.
Security footage showed Waychoft trying to break in, just as the witness said.
At about 5:20 am, another detective saw someone who matched Waychoft’s description. He told the detective that his name was David Christ and then said that his name was Jesus Christ.
Waychoft was taken to prison, where the police confirmed his true identity.
Waychoft had arrest warrants for criminal damage and major theft. He was arrested.
