CLEVELAND – Kevin Porter Jr. is no longer an issue for Cavaliers.
Cleveland agreed to exchange the striker with the Houston Rockets for a future draft, a person familiar with the deal told the Associated Press late on Thursday.
Cavs will send Porter, the draft pick of the first 2019 round that they haven’t played this season and recently had a blast in the team’s locker room, to the Rockets for a protected second round pick. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the negotiation needs to be approved by the NBA.
Porter’s days with the Cavs came to a head at the end of last week, when he was upset after learning that his space in the locker room had been given to newly acquired striker Taurean Prince. Porter only returned to practice with the Cavs the day before, after they spent months trying to help him.
General choice number 30 two years ago, Porter has a lot of talent and the Cavs hoped they could get the 20-year-old to join and be part of his future. But its most recent episode was the last straw for the organization, which has spent the last few days looking for a business partner.
Porter was arrested in November after a car accident, but the gun and marijuana possession charges were later dropped.
The Cavs played well despite several injuries this season and added a record of 7-7 in Friday’s game against the Nets. Cleveland beat Brooklyn in double overtime on Wednesday night.
Porter’s deal is the second for the Cavs this month. They acquired Prince and Jarrett Allen from Brooklyn as part of the four-team exchange that sent James Harden from Houston to the Nets.
