Comedian John Mulaney was admitted to a rehab facility for 60 days due to addiction to alcohol and cocaine.
A source exclusively confirmed to Page Six that the 38-year-old comedy’s golden boy checked into a Pennsylvania rehab clinic last weekend.
Netflix star and former Saturday Night Live student Mulaney has been open about his previous struggles with sobriety, telling stories of his parties, prescription and illegal drug abuse since young. He sobered up at the age of 23.
The source said: “John’s friends and family are happy that he is finally getting some help and focusing on his health.
“His fans know that he struggled in the past with sobriety, he talked about it openly. Unfortunately, he fought again during the pandemic.
“He is on board with his recovery, he is not fighting rehab.”
In an interview last year, Mulaney revealed that he started drinking at age 13. “I drank to get attention,” he said. “I was very outgoing and, at 12, I wasn’t. I didn’t know how to act. And then I was drinking and it was hilarious again. “
He said in a Esquire cover story that his drink also led him to start using drugs. He says that although he never liked to smoke marijuana, he “loved” cocaine and got involved with prescription drugs.
“I was not a good athlete, so maybe it was something from the young male of‘ This is the physical feat I can do. Three Vicodin and a tequila and I’m still standing, ‘”he said. “Who is the athlete now? “
When Mulaney was a teenager, his parents sent him to a psychiatrist, who told him that he was partly a nice boy, partly a “gorilla who wants to kill the other half”.
And in his 2012 special, “New in Town”, he said, “I don’t drink. I drank, then drank a lot and had to stop. This surprises the audience a lot, because I don’t look like someone who used to do anything. “
After years of passing out and even drinking perfume, the tipping point was a 2005 bender when he was 23.
He said to Esquire: “I went to torture that weekend that was just, like, coming and going from a movie … It was crazy … I was like, ‘You’re out of control'” he said. “And I thought to myself, ‘I don’t like this guy anymore. I’m not rooting for him. ‘”
Mulaney said he stopped using cocaine and drinking alcohol a month apart. He claimed he didn’t go to rehab, he just went through a withdrawal crisis and was sober for many years after that.
Mulaney, who was a writer for “SNL”, was seen hanging out with fellow comedian Pete Davidson, saying that one of his goals was to show Davidson that “you can have a life in comedy that isn’t insane – a sober, domestic life. “
But earlier this month, Mulaney – who hosted “SNL” for the fourth time in October and later revealed that he had been investigated by the Secret Service because of a joke – revealed that he had taken on the role of editor of the Seth Meyers program for the sake of his own mental health.
“During the quarantine, I was like, ‘Why am I going totally crazy and why am I suddenly telling my wife my accomplishments? ’” Mulaney said in “Jimmy Kimmel Live !,” in describing how a lack of routine can negatively affect a person’s well-being. “I really needed a job.”
“First, I like having a boss and tasks to do,” he added to Kimmel. “When I’m in charge of something, not so much of the best thing.”
He added that his psychiatrist agreed with the change.
“She said to me, ‘Without an external structure, I have no confidence in you prospering’ … and she would know, because I told her everything in my brain,” he said.
A Mulaney representative declined to comment.
