The number of people claiming universal credit in the UK has doubled since the beginning of pandemic, show new numbers.

Government figures released on Tuesday show the number of people receiving social security to benefit increased from 3 million in March 2020 to 6 million in January 2021.

The biggest monthly increase was between March and April, when the number rose 40 percent. But the number of claimants continued to increase month by month, increasing 6 percent – or 330,000 people – between September 2020 and January 2021.
