Caledonia kept its unbeaten record against teams from Minnesota intact this season with the win.
Point guard Austin Klug led a balanced attack with 14 points and point guard Jackson Koepke added 13 to send the Warriors (23-1) into the Class AA championship game on Saturday against Fergus Falls or Waseca, who played in the next semifinal. It will be the Warriors’ first appearance in the Class AA championship game since finishing as runner-up in 2018. The only loss to Caledonia this season was a 51-43 setback to Onalaska in Wis.
Caledonia moved away in the final moments, when it became a series of free throws at either end of the floor. Senior striker Sean Privet scored three in the final moments and Klug added a pair. Guard Andrew Kunelius gave Caledonia a 57-53 lead in two free throws with 20.9 seconds left. But Minneapolis North responded just seconds later, in two free throws from senior guard Andre Gray II, making the Polars less than two seconds away.
Striker Davon Townley Jr. overcame the Polars (15-2) with 19 points and was a force in the second half, while Minneapolis North was recovering from a 10 point disadvantage. Gray added 12 points to the Polars, who were looking for a place in the championship for the first time since finishing as runner-up in Class AA in 2019.
