A Tralee man and his friends are ready to tackle an exhaustive 10km rowing challenge later this month in aid of a mental health support charity that fundraiser organizer Trevor Leen has used in the past. .
revor hopes to hold a live broadcast event on Facebook on May 29, where his friends will take turns paddling on a rowing machine and will each try to reach the 10 km mark, all in support of the charity, ‘Text About It (50808) ‘.
Speaking to The Kerryman last week, Trevor praised the service’s work.
“May is Mental Health Awareness Month, so I knew I wanted to do something to mark this and so I came up with the idea for the rowing challenge. I’m definitely doing this [the 10km row] and I can have one or two more friends of mine to do that too. It will be difficult, but we will definitely get over it, “Trevor laughed.
‘Text About It (50808) is a free anonymous text support service open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and is a safe space to get in touch if you are suffering from anxiety, depression or any other problems.
“I had the idea of doing 10k for a few years, but I was never able to decide which charity to do that for. Personally, I have a connection with mental health problems and other problems, between OCD and being diagnosed with autism in 2018, I examined all systems, “he said.
“This [Text About It] it is a line of text, it is anonymous and I am doing it for them because I feel that many people are now more inclined to send text messages than to speak on the phone. They are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, which is great. I’ve used the service before and they are very, very good. They get you right away. “
“You send a ‘hello’ message to start it and then they send some questions and then you are put in a real person. For me, between that ‘hello’ and talking to a real person, it was seven minutes , so it was very efficient, “Trevor continued.
Trevor created an online GoFundMe page, where he initially set the goal of raising € 500 by 31 May. By the time this article was written, it has already raised € 295.
His GoFundMe page can be found by going to GoFundMe and looking for ‘Row10k’ for Trevor Leen.
Fundraising will be done mainly online due to current guidelines and the page will be open until May 31, where the total amount collected will be announced.
“Whether it’s € 2 or € 20, your donations will be deeply appreciated,” said Trevor.
