Abu Dhabi: Only 488 Saudis were sent abroad for medical treatment last year, compared with 2,842 people in 2019, a drop of 82 percent, revealed a Ministry of Health report.

The report showed that patients received treatment in countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Singapore and China.

The United States continued to be the main destination for medical treatments with 245 cases, followed by Germany with 142 cases and the United Kingdom with 101 cases.

Oncological cases

The tumors overcame the cases sent abroad for medical treatment with 304 cases, followed by general surgery with 57 cases, medical clinic with 28 cases, cardiac surgery with 26 cases, pediatric diseases with 22 cases, organ transplantation with 21 cases, then ophthalmology with 9 cases, medical rehabilitation and oral and dental medicine with 6 cases each, ear, nose and throat 5 cases, and finally gynecology and psychiatry two cases each.

The decision to treat patients abroad is based on a royal decree or recommendation made by the High Medical Commission.

Committee members are representatives of various health departments, such as the Ministry of Defense’s medical services department, the National Guard Ministry’s health affairs department, the Ministry of Interior’s medical services department, the King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center, university hospitals and Ministry of Health.

There are 18 medical committees spread across the Kingdom to deal with these cases. The Kingdom also appointed three attachés in the United States, Germany and the United Kingdom.

Saudi health offices abroad make appointments for patients at treatment centers abroad and oversee their treatment.
