Sterling at Croatia and Scotland games
Raheem Sterling said he spoke to his mother directly after sacking England for a Euro 2020 victory over Croatia.
He told the official England podcast:
“Right after the game, my mom started calling my phone when I was still in the locker room.
“I was like, ‘Listen, I don’t have time this minute, I’ll call you back when I’m on the bus.’ When I’m in the dressing room, I’m getting a massage, I can’t be FaceTiming my mom at that point.
“I talked to her a bit and then, of course, friends and my lady and some really good messages.”
Anticipating the next game against Scotland, Sterling said:
“There are things about the game against Croatia that we know we can do better. From my point of view, I think we could have kept the ball a little better, I think we could have played a little more in the rear, because when you play France and Spain, teams like this, we can’t just give them back because they will it will be a long time before we get it back.
“We have to do what they are going to try and do with us, they are going to try and make us race, we have to do that with the teams and we are more than capable of doing that.
“I thought sometimes we could have played a little longer, just keep the ball, keep them running, especially when it’s a hot day and we have the right players for that.
“Yes, we played against a good team from Croatia, but if we go into the round of 16 you will face these top-tier teams that have players who like to keep possession of the ball.
“We also have the same players, so I’m just thinking. We won 1-0, so of course we didn’t want to suffer, but at the same time, the best way to not suffer is not to give the ball to the opponent. So the longer we can keep the ball, the better. ”
