NH Primary Source: Leavitt says Dems ‘abandoned’ her family’s business despite COVID relief loans

LEAVITT: DEMS ‘ABANDONED FAMILIES LIKE MY OWN.’ Karoline Leavitt, the latest entrant into the growing Republican field for the 1st District U.S. House seat, certainly came out swinging with biting criticism of U.S. Rep. Chris Pappas, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and House Democrats in general in her announcement video this week. Leavitt spoke about her upbringing in a “middle class, blue collar, small business family” and has noted in interviews that she worked at the family’s ice cream stand in Atkinson and her father’s Leavitt Auto and Truck Company in Plaistow. On her website, Leavitt writes that when she served earlier this year as the communications director for Republican U.S. Rep. Elise Stefanik, “I watched in horror as my own Representative, Chris Pappas, continuously voted in lockstep with Nancy Pelosi, abandoning families like my own.” In her video, she says, clearly referring to Pappas and the other members of the state’s congressional delegation: “New Hampshire’s radical in disguise Democrat leadership votes in lockstep with Nancy Pelosi and abandoned families like my own with higher taxes, gun control, open borders, defunding our police, weakening our military, critical race theory in our schools, a federal government takeover of our elections and threatening New Hampshire’s first-in-the-nation primary status.” While that’s a broad shot, it should be noted that her family business took advantage of a loan program supported by Democrats, including Pappas – and many Republicans – during the COVID-19 pandemic. Data compiled from the U.S. Small Business Administration show that the company received $250,635 in two Paycheck Protection Program loans in February and April 2020, as well as two Economic Injury Disaster (EIDL) Loans totaling $160,000, also in April 2020. There is no record, by the way, of the Pappas family business, the Puritan Backroom and Conference Center, receiving PPP or EIDL loans. “It’s no surprise that on the first day of my campaign Chris Pappas is already trying to deflect from his anti-small business record,” Leavitt told New Hampshire Primary Source in a statement. “Chris Pappas, Nancy Pelosi, AOC (U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez) and Joe Biden’s policies have led to record high inflation and gas prices in just six months, and now they want to raise our taxes with their $3 trillion dollar ‘infrastructure’ bill,” she said. “The ‘Radical Left’ is pulling our country towards socialism and Chris Pappas is going along for the ride.”
